My twin, Jed, is the kindest and most brilliant man you will ever meet. As you can imagine, he and I are close, and despite any distance, nothing will ever separate our love. He was born just five minutes after me, and was almost born on a different day!
Jed has always learned differently, and thus, struggled in school. My father would not accept this about him, particularly since he had already had Stephanie, who was born with Down's Syndrome. Thus, there was tremendous friction in their relationship. When my dad arrived home and pulled his car into the garage, Jed would run out of the house.
Nature was something we both enjoyed together. It was our escape. In fact, Jed spent most of his time in bare feet, even outside, as the soothing energy of Mother Earth helped him feel safe. We had bug jars, and would collect fireflys—at night we watched the spectacle of light in the jar, and then released them.
We had a pond near our home, where we used to ice skate, but Jed did something quite unusual. He developed a relationship with two Mallard ducks, fondly calling them Oscar and Wilma. He trained them to walk to our home, and eventually, they landed in the back yard, where he would feed them.
Jed's knowledge around anything related to nature is extensive, from plants, to insects, animals, and birds. He is like a walking encyclopedia. He loves to learn, and actually grows catepillars in special containers. He sometimes goes to festivals to display them, and he is wonderful with children, and loves to educate them.
He has been married to his wife for over twenty years, and they live in Michigan. She, unfortunately, does not like me, and thus this has created a gap in our relationship. While we have not spoken for almost a year, I trust that we will come back together.
He brings his special gift of light to this planet, and as I go through old photographs of us, I smile. I'm proud of him. Despite all judgements from my parents and society, he has created a life where he feels fulfilled and joyful. He's a rare gem that I will always treasure...
